Letter To Ma |
ST JOHN'S COLLEGE,
DURHAM
Dear Muther Grumble, In view of the considerable amount of attention given in the national and local press concerning a directive from the National Monday Club, I should like, as chairman of the Durham branch, to make my position clear over this. The directive asks for blacklists to be drawn up by Monday Club branches in universities of Left-wing student activists and for all Leftist propaganda leaflets to be sent to London to be filed. As reported in the local press, I have no intention of taking any action whatsoever over this directive which I believe to be a tactless and unnecessary intervention into student political life. The unfortunate polarisation of political opinion that would result from my implementing this directive would have a harmful effect on the free expression of ideas and would create an atmosphere of suspicion. All good wishes, Sincerely, Maurice Assheton-Salton |
